Dr. Mark Gimbel discusses what to look for in a colon cancer surgeon.

colon cancer surgeonIt almost goes without saying that choosing a colon cancer surgeon is an important decision. Of course any colon cancer surgeon has the technical skills to get the job done but it is also important that you trust the surgeon and have an open line of communication with them.

It is important to look for a colon cancer surgeon with a wide variety of experience in different methods, such as laparoscopic and robotic surgery. For more, watch Dr. Mark Gimbel in the video below:

Mark Gimbel MD:  Deciding who your surgeon is going is to be as a very important step in recovery to colon cancer.  I think the most important thing about finding a surgeon is that there is a good line of communication.  You have to be comfortable answering or asking the questions that you want to your surgeon and your surgeon has to be comfortable answering the questions both to you and your family members.

It’s important that there is a good understanding from all parties prior to undertaking the actual surgery.  The next would be to have a surgeon who is perfection in doing what they do.  Someone who is capable of doing both minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic, or robotic as well as comfortable doing open large resections, if the tumor is involving other organs or if it has spread, it may need to be resected from another place.  You also want to find a surgeon who has relationship with both chemotherapy and radiation doctors, so you can find the unit or a team to help treat your cancer if that’s what needs happen.
