Heather Paulson ND FABNO:  Let’s talk a little bit deeper about the different types of fat, so there are omega-3 fats, omega-6 fats, and omega-9 fats and some of these fats are more helpful for reducing inflammation and improving your health than others.  When we talk about reducing inflammation and in particular reducing Cox-2 which is directly tied to colon cancer cell growth, the main fact that we look at is omega-3 fatty acids.

These omega-3 fatty acids are common in fish.  If you want plant based omega-3 fat, it’s great to look towards walnuts and other nuts and seeds, but the main benefit of omega-3 fats is for reducing inflammation and Cox-2.  The omega 6 fats, is what’s most common in the Standard American Diet.  The Omega-6 fats are found mostly in meat and particularly farm processed and industrial farmed meats and that is because they are not moving around.  They are not getting the exercise.  They are not eating their regular grass based diet, so this changes the fatty acids that are contained in the tissues.  Now the same could be said for you, if you are lacking some good plant-based foods and some good exercise, you too will have more inflamed tissue and that’s what’s happening to our meat sources, so we want to make sure that our meat sources are as healthy as we were choosing to be.
